À propos de Northumberland United Way

Aperçu

Northumberland United Way (also known as United Way Northumberland, NUW) is a local member of the United Way Centraide movement that has served Northumberland County, Ontario since 1969. Headquartered in Cobourg, it operates as both a fundraiser and grantmaker—running an annual community campaign and redistributing proceeds to dozens of local non-profit partners—and as a direct program operator and convenor, delivering in-house initiatives such as Backpacks for Kids, Northumberland Eats, Period Promise, Day of Caring, and Haven for All, while also convening community tables and advocacy efforts on poverty, housing, and food security. It organizes its work around three strategic pillars: Poverty ('From Poverty to Possibility'), Kids ('All That Kids Can Be'), and Community ('Strong Communities').

Mission

Northumberland United Way's mission is to bring people and resources together to build a strong, healthy, safe community for all, creating a better life for everyone in Northumberland County through leadership and partnership that mobilize community resources. It works to help kids build strong relationships, connect families to social services, and support seniors in remaining independent in their homes.

Vision

Northumberland United Way envisions an inclusive community where no one is left behind, aspiring to a future in which Northumberland County is measurably better because of its work. It pursues this through strategic pillars addressing poverty, children's development, and overall community strength, guided by values of transparency and accountability in stewarding donor resources, and by a commitment to reconciliation reflected in its acknowledgement of the traditional Anishnabek, Huron-Wendat, Haudenosaunee and Ojibway/Chippewa territories it serves.

Proposition de valeur unique

Northumberland United Way positions itself as the largest non-governmental funder of health and human services in Northumberland County, reaching roughly one in four county residents through United Way-funded programs each year. Its 'support many, not one' donor model allows a single gift to fund dozens of partner agencies simultaneously, while its dual role as both direct program operator (e.g., Backpacks for Kids, Northumberland Eats, Period Promise) and systems-level convenor—holding seats on tables such as the Food Policy Table, Homelessness Leadership Table, and Community Safety and Well-Being Table—distinguishes it from organizations that only fundraise or only deliver services. It also emphasizes a prevention-oriented approach, actively expanding into newer areas like affordable housing to help people avoid crisis before it occurs.
