Overview

The Nature Conservancy of Canada/La Societe Canadienne Pour La Conservation De La Nature protects our most important natural areas and the species they sustain. On the southern, settled landscape, NCC uses evidence-based conservation planning to identify projects, acquire land, and manage it for the future. NCC administers the Natural Heritage Conservation Program, a unique public-private partnership with the Government of Canada. NCC also facilitates conservation by bringing together partners to remove private resource rights on land (oil, gas, timber, etc.) that may be barriers to conservation. Increasingly, NCC shares its conservation expertise to assist Northern communities achieve their conservation goals supporting expanded parks and protected areas, including Indigenous Protected and Conserved Areas. NCC operates national internship & volunteer programs. In fiscal year 2019/20, both programs were impacted by restrictions due to COVID-19. NCC works with partners in academia to conduct, support, and distribute original research on biodiversity conservation. The Weston Family Senior Scientist and Science Fellowship Programs were new in F 19/20. NCC creates partnerships with individuals, corporations, community groups, foundations, and government agencies to find durable conservation solutions. In this year, NCC and its supporters helped to conserve 7,086 hectares (17,510 acres) through 87 projects and provided habitat protection for more than 34% of Canada's species at risk.

NCC operates with a collaborative approach, working with partners to remove barriers to conservation and delivering on-the-ground conservation results.
