About Allan Gardens Food Bank

Overview

Allan Gardens Food Bank (AGFB) is a registered Canadian charity and entirely volunteer-run food bank operating out of St. Luke's United Church at 353 Sherbourne Street in downtown Toronto. It serves residents of the downtown east area, distributing fresh produce, dairy, grains, protein, and canned goods to over a thousand clients each week through a client-choice model, while also delivering food to approximately 80 isolated and vulnerable individuals weekly and supporting a meal program that provides roughly 600 additional meals per week. The organization is largely self-funded and supplements donated food from partners such as Daily Bread Food Bank and Second Harvest with purchased supplies to ensure nutritional balance.

Mission

Allan Gardens Food Bank exists to relieve poverty by providing nutritious food and other basic supplies in a safe and compassionate environment to individuals and families in downtown Toronto who are struggling with food insecurity.

Unique value proposition

Allan Gardens Food Bank distinguishes itself through a dignified, client-choice "shopping-style" model that allows community members to select their own food rather than receiving pre-packaged hampers, reinforcing autonomy and respect. It extends its reach through home delivery to isolated individuals and an associated meal program, and has become a critical safety net in the downtown east community as other nearby food banks have closed, absorbing significantly increased demand. As a fully volunteer-run, largely self-funded independent charity, it operates with a strong grassroots commitment to serving its defined neighbourhood catchment with consistency and compassion.

Frequently asked questions

Everything you need to know about getting started.

How does WellFunded work?

Donor-advised funds, wealth advisors and foundations use WellFunded to find, research and fund Canadian charities. Instead of rewriting the same proposal for every funder, you complete one profile and it's ready for all of them. Fill in a few short sections and upload your annual report, and we'll turn it into an impact page funders can find by cause, location and program.

Do I need to apply for funding?

No. Funders search WellFunded for charities that match what they want to support, and your profile is what they find. When a funder wants to know more, you'll hear from us. Some funders also post Giving Opportunities for a specific focus, and you can respond to those with the profile you've already built.

What does it cost?

WellFunded is free for charities. We don't charge transaction fees, and we never take a cut of any gift. Funders pay to use the platform.

Who sees my profile?

Donor-advised funds, advisors and foundations using WellFunded to research charities. Together they manage over $2.3B in charitable assets. WellFunded isn't open to the general public.

What is a WellCheck?

When a funder is seriously considering your charity, they may ask for a WellCheck. It's a short set of questions plus a few documents, reviewed alongside your audited financials and CRA filings. We present findings, not verdicts: no scores and no rankings. Do it once, and it's ready for every funder who asks after that.

Is my information secure?

Yes. Your data stays in Canada, and we never sell it. See our privacy policy for details.

Is this legitimate?

WellFunded is a Canadian company, built in B.C. by the team behind one of Canada's first online donor-advised funds. If you'd like to meet us first, book a small group session with Jeff, our co-founder and CEO.
