About The Shoebox Project For Shelters / Operation Boite A Chaussures Pour Refuges

Overview

The Shoebox Project for Shelters/Operation Boite A Chassures Pour Refuges is a charity that provides gifts to women living in shelters or accessing community support. They also work to raise awareness of women's homelessness, poverty, and violence against women. Through their programs, they aim to bring a sense of joy and dignity to women in need, while also advocating for social change to address the root causes of these issues.

Mission

The Shoebox Project's mission is to uplift and empower women who are experiencing or at-risk of homelessness through in-kind support, education, and community participation. It works to provide gifts to women living in shelters or accessing community support, and to raise awareness of women's homelessness, poverty, and violence against women.

Vision

The organization envisions equitable communities where all women are seen, valued, and treated with dignity and compassion. It aims to celebrate resilience and diversity, build awareness, challenge stigma against those experiencing homelessness, and promote equity for women and gender-diverse people.

Unique value proposition

The Shoebox Project distinguishes itself through a dignity-first, in-kind model centered not only on material goods but on personalized, handwritten messages of encouragement—captured in its tagline 'It's more than a gift. It's a reminder that we all matter.' It fills a gender-specific gap in holiday giving, having been founded because existing gift drives served children experiencing homelessness but overlooked mothers and adult women. Its distributed, volunteer-owned chapter model—run by local coordinators with a tiny central staff—allows it to partner with existing shelters and agencies rather than duplicate services, achieving broad national reach (444,800+ shoeboxes delivered since 2011 across over 660 communities) with minimal overhead.

Frequently asked questions

Everything you need to know about getting started.

How does WellFunded work?

Donor-advised funds, wealth advisors and foundations use WellFunded to find, research and fund Canadian charities. Instead of rewriting the same proposal for every funder, you complete one profile and it's ready for all of them. Fill in a few short sections and upload your annual report, and we'll turn it into an impact page funders can find by cause, location and program.

Do I need to apply for funding?

No. Funders search WellFunded for charities that match what they want to support, and your profile is what they find. When a funder wants to know more, you'll hear from us. Some funders also post Giving Opportunities for a specific focus, and you can respond to those with the profile you've already built.

What does it cost?

WellFunded is free for charities. We don't charge transaction fees, and we never take a cut of any gift. Funders pay to use the platform.

Who sees my profile?

Donor-advised funds, advisors and foundations using WellFunded to research charities. Together they manage over $2.3B in charitable assets. WellFunded isn't open to the general public.

What is a WellCheck?

When a funder is seriously considering your charity, they may ask for a WellCheck. It's a short set of questions plus a few documents, reviewed alongside your audited financials and CRA filings. We present findings, not verdicts: no scores and no rankings. Do it once, and it's ready for every funder who asks after that.

Is my information secure?

Yes. Your data stays in Canada, and we never sell it. See our privacy policy for details.

Is this legitimate?

WellFunded is a Canadian company, built in B.C. by the team behind one of Canada's first online donor-advised funds. If you'd like to meet us first, book a small group session with Jeff, our co-founder and CEO.
