About Toronto Arts Foundation

Overview

The Toronto Arts Foundation provides financial support to artistic and cultural organizations in the city of Toronto. They also offer scholarships, gifts, and awards to individuals who have made outstanding contributions to the arts in Toronto. Additionally, the foundation receives special funds commemorating donors or others to support the arts as donors wish. They have also created an endowment fund, the income from which may be used as a potential source of income for the Toronto Arts Council.

Mission

Toronto Arts Foundation exists to cultivate a rich engagement between artists and audiences, encourage private sector support, and build a more vibrant, sustainable, and inclusive arts sector in Toronto. Founded in 1995, it provides individuals, corporations, foundations, and government agencies with meaningful opportunities to invest in and strengthen the arts across the city, championing artists and arts organizations with agility, care, and vision.

Vision

Toronto Arts Foundation envisions Toronto as a vibrant, global city where life is creative, artists thrive because they are valued, and the arts inspire connected communities for all. Guided by its 'Creative City: Block by Block' framing, the Foundation works toward a future in which every Toronto neighbourhood benefits from the transformative social and economic power of the arts, and in which the arts sector is vibrant, inclusive, and globally connected.

Unique value proposition

Toronto Arts Foundation is distinctive as the only city-wide charitable vehicle dedicated exclusively to strengthening Toronto's arts sector through philanthropy, awards, and direct programming. Its uniquely close integration with Toronto Arts Council β€” sharing a CEO, staff, and board members β€” gives it an unparalleled understanding of the challenges facing artists across the city and allows it to act as both a funder and a civic advocate. With a deliberate equity focus that prioritizes Indigenous, Black, newcomer, refugee, and 2SLGBTQ+ artists, and a commitment to bringing arts programming to underserved neighbourhoods beyond the downtown core, TAF combines philanthropic infrastructure with grassroots community reach in a way no other Toronto arts organization does.

Frequently asked questions

Everything you need to know about getting started.

How does WellFunded work?

Donor-advised funds, wealth advisors and foundations use WellFunded to find, research and fund Canadian charities. Instead of rewriting the same proposal for every funder, you complete one profile and it's ready for all of them. Fill in a few short sections and upload your annual report, and we'll turn it into an impact page funders can find by cause, location and program.

Do I need to apply for funding?

No. Funders search WellFunded for charities that match what they want to support, and your profile is what they find. When a funder wants to know more, you'll hear from us. Some funders also post Giving Opportunities for a specific focus, and you can respond to those with the profile you've already built.

What does it cost?

WellFunded is free for charities. We don't charge transaction fees, and we never take a cut of any gift. Funders pay to use the platform.

Who sees my profile?

Donor-advised funds, advisors and foundations using WellFunded to research charities. Together they manage over $2.3B in charitable assets. WellFunded isn't open to the general public.

What is a WellCheck?

When a funder is seriously considering your charity, they may ask for a WellCheck. It's a short set of questions plus a few documents, reviewed alongside your audited financials and CRA filings. We present findings, not verdicts: no scores and no rankings. Do it once, and it's ready for every funder who asks after that.

Is my information secure?

Yes. Your data stays in Canada, and we never sell it. See our privacy policy for details.

Is this legitimate?

WellFunded is a Canadian company, built in B.C. by the team behind one of Canada's first online donor-advised funds. If you'd like to meet us first, book a small group session with Jeff, our co-founder and CEO.
