About Heritage Toronto

Overview

Heritage Toronto is a registered charity and City of Toronto agency dedicated to public engagement with local history and heritage. Founded in 1960 as the Toronto Historical Board and renamed in 1999, the organization is headquartered at Historic St. Lawrence Hall in downtown Toronto. It delivers a broad range of programs city-wide, including North America's most active historical plaque program, seasonal tours, digital exhibitions, the annual Heritage Toronto Awards, the Emerging Historians program, and the Equity Heritage Initiative. In its dual role as an independent charity and a City agency, Heritage Toronto also advocates for the protection of Toronto's heritage assets and publishes the periodic State of Heritage Report to inform municipal decision-makers.

Mission

Heritage Toronto exists to commemorate and celebrate Toronto's people, places, and events, and to build public understanding and appreciation of the city's cultural, architectural, archaeological, and natural heritage. It pursues this purpose through education, commemoration, and community engagement, delivering more than 80 public programs annually — including historical plaques, walking and cycling tours, digital exhibitions, and the Heritage Toronto Awards — while also providing heritage policy advice to the City of Toronto, civic organizations, and the public.

Vision

Heritage Toronto envisions a compassionate city that honours its diverse stories and ensures every resident feels reflected and has a voice in its future. The organization works toward a Toronto where heritage is accessible, relevant, and equitable — one in which the histories of under-represented and equity-deserving communities are actively surfaced, celebrated, and woven into the city's shared identity.

Unique value proposition

Heritage Toronto occupies a distinctive dual position as both an independent registered charity and an official City of Toronto agency, enabling it to combine community-driven programming with meaningful heritage policy influence. It operates North America's most active historical plaque program, producing over 100 plaques annually, and directs more than 70 percent of its commemorative and digital content toward equity-deserving histories. Through initiatives such as the Equity Heritage Initiative and the Emerging Historians program, Heritage Toronto actively empowers under-represented communities to shape how the city's past is told — making it a leader not only in heritage commemoration but in inclusive, equity-centred public history.
