About Toronto Foundation

Overview

Toronto Foundation is Toronto's community foundation, established in 1981 and dedicated to improving quality of life across the city. It pools and administers charitable endowment and donor-advised funds, invests them responsibly, and redistributes resources through grants to registered charities and community organizations. With more than 1,000 funds, over $400 million granted since inception, and more than half a billion dollars in assets under management, it is one of Canada's largest community foundations. The Foundation also conducts original research through its flagship Toronto's Vital Signs® Report and convenes donors, nonprofits, and community leaders to advance collective impact.

Mission

Toronto Foundation exists to create a more fair and just society where everyone can thrive by mobilizing those with resources and the will to partner with others. It strengthens quality of life in Toronto by connecting generous donors with high-impact community organizations, channeling philanthropic capital through strategic grantmaking focused on equity and long-term community well-being.

Vision

Toronto Foundation works toward a more fair and just society where everyone can thrive. It is committed to equity, reconciliation, and Indigenous sovereignty as foundational to this future, recognizing philanthropy's responsibility to address systemic biases and advance greater equality. The Foundation envisions Toronto as a city of neighbours, where social cohesion and collective well-being are strengthened through inclusive, participatory, and power-shifting approaches to giving and community investment.

Unique value proposition

Toronto Foundation distinguishes itself as a place-based, city-building philanthropic institution that combines collective and responsible investing, strategic grantmaking, original community research, and donor education under one roof. Its Toronto's Vital Signs® research — tracking wellbeing across the city since 2001 — directly informs its granting priorities and positions the Foundation as a uniquely evidence-driven philanthropic partner. It further differentiates itself through an inclusive, participatory approach to philanthropy, championing power-shifting grant models such as the Black and Indigenous Futures Fund and piloting direct funding to grassroots non-qualified donees, while offering donors tailored services including giving circles, social impact investing, and planned giving support.

Frequently asked questions

Everything you need to know about getting started.

How does WellFunded work?

Donor-advised funds, wealth advisors and foundations use WellFunded to find, research and fund Canadian charities. Instead of rewriting the same proposal for every funder, you complete one profile and it's ready for all of them. Fill in a few short sections and upload your annual report, and we'll turn it into an impact page funders can find by cause, location and program.

Do I need to apply for funding?

No. Funders search WellFunded for charities that match what they want to support, and your profile is what they find. When a funder wants to know more, you'll hear from us. Some funders also post Giving Opportunities for a specific focus, and you can respond to those with the profile you've already built.

What does it cost?

WellFunded is free for charities. We don't charge transaction fees, and we never take a cut of any gift. Funders pay to use the platform.

Who sees my profile?

Donor-advised funds, advisors and foundations using WellFunded to research charities. Together they manage over $2.3B in charitable assets. WellFunded isn't open to the general public.

What is a WellCheck?

When a funder is seriously considering your charity, they may ask for a WellCheck. It's a short set of questions plus a few documents, reviewed alongside your audited financials and CRA filings. We present findings, not verdicts: no scores and no rankings. Do it once, and it's ready for every funder who asks after that.

Is my information secure?

Yes. Your data stays in Canada, and we never sell it. See our privacy policy for details.

Is this legitimate?

WellFunded is a Canadian company, built in B.C. by the team behind one of Canada's first online donor-advised funds. If you'd like to meet us first, book a small group session with Jeff, our co-founder and CEO.
