About Toronto Metropolitan University

Overview

Toronto Metropolitan University (TMU) is a leading Canadian urban university known for its commitment to equity, innovation, and inclusive excellence. Located in the heart of downtown Toronto, TMU is a charitable organization that transforms lives through accessible, career-relevant education and cutting-edge research.

With a strong focus on community impact, TMU prioritizes access to education for underrepresented learners, fosters Indigenous knowledge and reconciliation, and drives innovation across disciplines. Donors support initiatives that empower students, advance social justice, and tackle real-world challenges—from climate change to public health to civic engagement.

Mission

TMU’s academic mission is to advance applied knowledge and research to address societal needs. This includes delivering programs of study that balance theory with application and preparing students for careers after graduation. As a leading experiential and applied learning institution, TMU is recognized for the relevance of its curriculum, the quality of its teaching and the success of its students in their career pursuits.

Located at the centre of Canada’s largest city, TMU has embraced its role as a city builder. Partnering with organizations that share our values, we are working on the complex challenges faced by Toronto, Brampton, the Greater Toronto Area and cities around the world. With our progressive values, we are champions of equity, diversity and inclusion (EDI).

Vision

From day one, Toronto Metropolitan University’s (TMU’s) mission has been unique – to serve societal need and to prepare students for careers.

Over more than 70 years, TMU’s commitment to groundbreaking thinking has grown steadily stronger.

We have pioneered experiential learning approaches, launched programs in innovation and entrepreneurship, enhanced our scholarly research and creative (SRC) capacity, and introduced our deliberately disruptive law school. And TMU’s values are equally progressive – we are a world leader in equity, diversity and inclusion.

All of this, along with our place in the heart of Canada’s busiest city, has encouraged TMU to embrace a new role as city builder. We now partner with like-minded organizations and bring together highly skilled, creative thinkers to work on the increasingly complex challenges faced by Toronto and urban centres around the world.

The demand for a TMU education has never been greater, and in the last decade, we dramatically increased the size of our campus.

The most successful organizations are always in motion. Today, TMU is building on the momentum of the last ten years and planning what comes next.

This website outlines TMU’s priorities for 2020 through 2030.

Strategic plans prepared by leaders across the university will help us fulfill this vision and confidently meet the challenges of the fast-changing social, cultural and economic landscape in which we operate, so that our students and graduates, faculty and staff, partners and communities will continue to thrive.

Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know about getting started

WellFunded eliminates the inefficiencies, inequities and ineffectiveness of traditional fundraising by centralizing and standardizing the process. Instead of spending time on endless grant applications, you create a single, detailed profile that philanthropists and foundations can easily discover and fund. Our other tools like our centralized due diligence tool and "2 click grants" (coming soon) build off of this core concept: that we can make things radically better by centralizing them on one common platform.

Philanthropists can browse charity profiles, see your funding needs, and express interest directly—saving you countless hours. We are soon rolling out a "two click granting" tool where donors can set their granting preferences and if your charity matches their preferences, you will automatically be notified in your dashboard, and can send your portrait onward right through to their WellFunded dashboard. Sort of like applying to a job through LinkedIn Easy Apply.

WellFunded charges philanthropists presently. For charities, WellFunded offers a free tier, with plans for affordable paid options that provide enhanced visibility and engagement tools. However, we will always have a free tier. We will introduce pricing once enough active donors use the platform to influence giving.

Instead of relying on cold proposals or personal networks, WellFunded helps you get in front of philanthropists actively looking to give in your area of impact. With advanced search tools and standardized due diligence, your work speaks for itself—helping you build trust and attract new donors.

Charity profiles include leadership information, financial data, and clear funding needs. Philanthropists can also see impact reports and follow the giving activity of other donors, creating a more open and transparent ecosystem.
